🦈Shark Tank India is not what you think it is.
Hey friends,
So, let’s start the first issue today with a reality check of Shark Tank India. While I love the show, there are many things going on behind the scenes that very few viewers know about. The actual pitches that go on in Shark Tank India is about 45 minutes long, and what we see is almost 25-30% of that on air.
And some Sharks actually do get paid for each episode (like Mamaearth’s co-founder charges ₹8 lacs per episode) but the money they invest is their own. So, how does the showrunner earn? Ads obviously. The show earns around ₹ 500 crore in revenue per year. Shocking right?
Here’s another fact: The money that the founders ask in exchange for equity is really low, and they get much more value outside. So, why do the founders pitch in Shark Tank India? Guess again. Advertising obviously. Case in point: Hammer electronics which was showcased in season 1 exploded in sales after their appearance on Shark Tank. Earlier their sales were around ₹ 70 lacs monthly, and now their sales have shot up to ₹ 2 crores monthly!
The same case is with many other brands too. The goal for pitchers is now to make the pitch as interesting as possible for the audience so they can remember and search and buy their products. Funding is secondary now as advertising is more valuable than the investment.
And when each company gets funded, they go thoroughly with a due diligence process, where they check if the company is legal, if the business is legit, and if there are any cases pending against that company. What you see are just the drama parts.
Dentistry🦷
This week, we visited the AMC Dental college in Ahmedabad for a workshop on Implantology. It was a wonderful experience, and we did get a lot to learn about the basics of implants (the permanent screw that is placed in your mouth when you lose a tooth, more info here). Dr. Shaswat Jain is an incredible speaker, and along with him the founder of EVOQ labs, Dr. Dhaval Thakkar also made an appearance. He gave us a demo on how their lab operates and the CAD-CAM designing they do for our crowns.
Our college also received an all-new OSSTEM TS kit for implants, so we do expect some great cases to be done in the coming months.
For non-dental people, in implants, there are different systems and different brands. There are around 300 brands in the market with each having their own USP, and we prefer what is best for the patient as well as the dentist.
Tech updates👨💻
The iQOO 11 was launched earlier this month, but I didn’t like it tbh. The phone was merely specs on paper. The actual phone had very poor optimizations according to the reviews I’ve seen.
Meanwhile, Apple did release the M2 Pro and M2 Max processors, and along with devices like the Mac Mini, and the MacBook Pro 14 and 16. The new HomePod made a comeback too, with room sensing features, temperature control, and most importantly, Matter integration (a new standard that makes devices talk to each other more conveniently).
Btw I also published a few new articles, such as the Indian Gadget Awards nominees for best Gaming Laptops of 2022, and my experience with the Android 13 beta on the Nothing Phone (1). Check them out.
Nokia also launched a new tablet dubbed the T21. It has a 10.36-inch display, 4+64 variant, UNISOC T612 SoC, and is priced at ₹17,999.
